Description

The first bioclimatic traffic education park in the Municipality of Glyfada, created for children and adults, is located in a lush green area in the Karvela district. It represents an intervention in a city known for its innovation and child-centric design.

The modern city block, enclosed by Epaminonda-Ifestou-Dimela-Poseidonos streets, simulates a road network with traffic lights, crosswalks, and basic traffic signs. Children learn in an experiential, simple, and understandable way how to navigate through a miniature environment of a real city, both as conscientious drivers and cautious pedestrians. The space is designed with numerous green corners (trees, shrubs, flowers) and spacious wooden tables with integrated benches, where parents or guardians can spend their time pleasantly, without ever losing sight of the children. The prototype space, built to the highest construction standards and featuring hundreds of new trees and plants, becomes a safe playground with state-of-the-art lighting, large sidewalks, and surfaces in bioclimatic materials.

Description

The architectural goal of the redevelopment of the New Cemetery of Glyfada is to create a space where the natural environment remains prevalent, while the final impression and appearance do not resemble the usual image of Greek cemeteries, where marble and hard surfaces dominate.

The project started in late 2014 when a special law granted an area of 42 acres for the construction of a new cemetery within the premises of the Hellenic Air Force installations in Ano Glyfada, where the Telecommunications and Electronic Media Factory (ETEM) has been housed for decades. The burial areas in most of the cemetery do not consist of visible grave formations but are covered within larger units that follow the slope of the terrain while maintaining the character of natural landscaping. In total, more than 1,000 trees were planted, while the Municipality of Glyfada concurrently constructed a new perimeter road with lighting and fencing, as well as the necessary hydraulic works for the drainage of rainwater from the cemetery.

Description

The Armed Forces Park, located in the municipal community of Tavros, covers an area of fifty-three acres. To the east, it fronts onto Konstantioupoleos Ave., while to the north and northeast it borders on Plot 153A, which houses residences for the Ministry of National Defense personnel. To the south and southwest, adjacent to the entrance on Eirinis Ave, the park is flanked by residential areas and a beverage industry. To the west, it borders on military pharmaceutical warehouses and an open parking area for heavy vehicles. Its uses include a Traffic Education Park, open-air cinema, cafeteria, playground, and a refreshment stand. The park is open to visitors daily, with access from both entrances on Konstantinoupoleos Avenue. The northern entrance, although equipped with parking space, is open only to pedestrians. The southern and central entrances have parking space and are next to the open-air cinema, which attracts many visitors during the summer months.

The park is the only green space of such size for the residents of the Municipality of Moschato-Tavros; even on a metropolitan level, the only green area of similar size in close proximity is Philopappou Hill in Koukaki, Athens. Therefore, the park attracts many visitors from surrounding districts, including schools that visit the Traffic Education Park, while many people come on a daily basis for cycling or walking. Residents of Tavros enter the park from the secondary entrance, on Eirinis Ave., while the entrance from Samou Street remains closed and is mainly used by municipal maintenance vehicles.

As part of the overall upgrade of the park, all railings are replaced, and a new metal fence is installed on the existing cement wall along Konstantinoupoleos Ave. The ground is covered with gardening soil, with local groundwork amendments for reaching the desired height. New paths and flowerbeds are designed throughout, and the existing cable network is buried, accommodating new 3m-high lighting poles along the pathways. The new underground power supply network additionally supports the pumping station and the open air cinema. The interior of the playground is reconfigured with safety rubber floors, modern equipment, pergolas, and three different types of seating. The walking surfaces are covered with porous, compacted processed soil, pebbles or gravel, and bark, while wooden curbs are constructed in the planting beds. Signage is upgraded with metal signs for guidance and navigation.

Description

The lighthouse is located on the southern side of Salamina, in Kochi or Kokki, between the resorts of Peristeria and Kolones. The complex was constructed in the early 20th century and first operated in 1901. It consists of a 134.75 m² building, with an 11m-high tower located in the center, crowned by a metal cage. The lighthouse had suffered extensive damage due to the age of the building, lack of maintenance, and its proximity to the sea.

The restoration is based on three principles: respecting and highlighting the typological and morphological characteristics of the listed building, ensuring the monument’s durability over time, and facilitating the possibility of its reuse. In this direction, construction and electromechanical restoration works of the lighthouse were carried out, including the upgrade of the surrounding area; connection to the power grid was provided anew, and signs were installed, while print and electronic material was created for information and publicity regarding the monument.

This project complements and completes the integrated management of urban sewage in Spetses, including collection, transport, treatment, and disposal. This need arose during the construction of the sewage pipeline in the area of the Ancient Baths, where antiquities were found, so the pipeline could not be constructed at the depths specified in the project study. Therefore, in the context of finding alternative solutions, taking into account the slopes of the area, the excavation depths, the limited space for work execution, and the possibility of draining adjacent properties, the Service deemed the construction of this network segment as a suction network as the most suitable solution.

The relevant construction works of the remaining network include the construction of gravity sewer pipes from structured wall plastic pipes in open trench, with a total length of 19,245.00 m; the construction of pressure sewer pipes from polyethylene segments in open trench, with a total length of 970.00 m; the construction of inspection chambers using precast concrete circular manholes, totaling 637 pieces; the construction of inspection chambers using precast synthetic material manholes, totaling 44 pieces; and the construction of a vacuum sewer network, including the preparation of its implementation study.
