The new “Andreas Papadimitriou” Square, covering an area of approximately five acres, was transformed from an undeveloped area into a natural space of recreation for the residents of Moschato, near the beach. The square was designed and constructed with the aim of achieving lower carbon emissions, zero energy consumption, and improving the microclimate. This was achieved with the use of bioclimatic paving materials, water-permeable flooring, increased shading and green surfaces, reduced energy consumption for lighting, and limited use of irrigation water.
During the regeneration of the square, a children’s playground was created with suitable flooring and modern equipment, a communal relaxation area with a shelter and a paved area for events, an outdoor exercise area with gym equipment, and walking paths, both along perimeter and in the interior. As part of the overall regeneration of the neighborhood, a section of Athanasiou Diakou street was pedestrianized, the area was configured for full and safe access by people with disabilities, greenery was enhanced with tree and shrub planting, benches and other urban equipment, low-consumption LED lights and bollard lighting were installed, and additional plumbing works were carried out.
